Free Microsoft Tools to Engage Your Students
by Grant Zimmerman

Tools for Engaging All Learners in the Classroom

You are right. This is the time to make the leap and take the high road to engaging all of your students. This class, developed by Knowledge Network Solutions for Microsoft Corporation, uses innovative tools by Microsoft that capitalize on the curricular goals and learning objectives. Students actively engage their minds and build their skills as they use the tools to create authentic products or performances.

For technology coordinators and lead teachers, deliver the coursework during a full day’s workshop. The class files, manual, videos, and presentation PowerPoint can be found and downloaded free at Partners in Learning Network, http://us.partnersinlearningnetwork.com. Sign in with your Windows Live ID, click on Community, and select Microsoft Teacher Professional Development.
The four videos present information about the class, Tools for Engaging All Learners in the Classroom:
1.       Workshop Introduction
2.       Workshop Learning Objectives
3.       Workshop Preparation
4.       Workshop Tips and Tricks
The first two videos presented here will wet your appetite for trying some new ideas using Microsoft tools. These classes can also be used for individual study. Check with your district office about earning CEU credits for both your individual study and workshop presentations.

Windows Live Messenger Update: Version 14.0
I am a fan of Live Messenger. The latest iteration, however, has a "Not able to sign in..." issue that spans XP, Vista, and Win 7. On August 2, 2010, Microsoft posted a fix or workaround that involves deleting a single line to the registry. It is a simple fix and it does work. If you have never worked with Windows Registry files, however, it can seem daunting and scary. Always make your first action when working with registry a backup of that group of files. The directions given with this link are great at Windows Live Solution Center,
